Common questions relating to newborn, baby, child and family photography

How long does a professional newborn, baby, child or family photography session last?
Up to 2 hours, depending on how responsive your child is being and the package you have booked. Newborn shoots can take up to 3-4 hours to allow lots of time for feeding, nappy changes, cuddles etc. However I never time sessions and will stay as long as necessary to get the images you want.

What products do you sell?
I sell digital images, prints and various desktop and wall art products. You can see my product guide here.

Are digital images edited?
Yes, any digital images ordered will be professionally retouched with blemishes, scratches, dribble etc removed.

How far will you travel?
I live in Herne Hill, South London but will travel up to an hour within London and Surrey. Anything over an hour (c10 miles) will incur an additional travel charge.

Can parents be in the photos too?
Absolutely. I take a mix of traditional posed portraits and natural images of you just playing with your baby/ child.

What should my baby/ child wear?
Light colours are best - doesn't need to be totally plain but avoid too many patterns/ logos. Accessories such as hats always make fun photos, as does the inclusion of their favourite toy! Newborns are mostly photographed naked, but if you want some clothed shots avoid oversized babygrows as they swamp your baby. Siblings should be coordinated!

What should my partner and I wear?
It's best to wear light, non-patterned clothes and make sure you are both coordinated and wearing similar tones. Light to mid tones are best for black and white photos.

Can we have the photography session on the weekend?
Yes you can, as both parents will very often want to be there. However, weekends get filled up faster so require more advance booking.

What about black and white images?
I take a mix of both colour and black and white photos at your session. Family photos especially work well in black and white!

Can I rearrange the photography session at short notice?
Absolutely, there is no point in trying to get photos of a poorly baby or child! However I ask that you give me as much notice as possible.

I'm pregnant. When should I book in my newborn photography session?
Newborn photography sessions are best within the first 10 days while your baby is still very sleepy! I would suggest booking 7 days after your due date and if baby is early or late we can rearrange as necessary. Newborn sessions can be done up to around 6 weeks though if necessary.

I am trusting you with my newborn. How do I know you will handle them safely?
ShutterBaby is a member of the Baby and Newborn Photography Association and you can be secure in the knowledge that I will handle your newborn correctly. Newborn sessions are entirely baby-led and I don't force any poses which they are not comfortable in.

How many photos will you provide for me to make my selections from?
Normally this is 20-30, but if you have a bigger family I may provide more. I will definitely show you all the amazing ones :-)

How long will it be until we can we see our photos?
Viewings are either through an ordering appointment or online gallery (if not convenient to have an in-person appointment). I aim to get your images ready for you to view within one week of the shoot.

When do I need to decide what products to order?
Either on the day of the ordering appointment or within one week of your gallery being posted, as due to website capacity I cannot keep client galleries live after that time. However, I will keep a copy of your photos offline for longer should you need it.

When do I need to pay you?
The photography session fee must be paid at the time of booking, via cheque or bank transfer. Payment for all additional products ordered is due at the time of ordering. Collections and packages are also payable in advance. Click to see my price list.

Can I buy a gift voucher?
Yes! A newborn, baby, child or family photography session makes a fabulous gift. You can choose the session fee or any of the collections on offer and I will make up a personalised gift voucher for you. Please make sure the recipient lives in my catchment area in London or Surrey. Vouchers are valid for 6 months.
